I've been re-reading Viewfinder by Yamane Ayano over and over again.
I. Just. Can. Not. Stop.
My obsession with Yaoi is one one thing, and my obsession with Viewfinder is another thing altogether. It's one of the only original Yaoi mangas (aside from The Tyrant who Falls in Love, Crimson Spell and Junjyou Romantica) that makes my hand itch to write fan fictions for, and I swear I'll get at least one drabble done by the end of this week.
Or maybe I should submit a few essays to Miss Kon for Language Development instead... She makes me wonder if my English really is that bad.
Coming back to Viewfinder... If you're a Yaoi fan, and you have not yet read it - by all means, please do so. The drawing is really wonderful, as expected from Ayano-sensei, and the plot is just so thrilling. Each chapter screams smex, suspense, a healthy portion of angst and crack (at times). You've got to love Asami Ryuuichi's aggressiveness (and unrivalled seme-ness), Takaba Akihito's petulance and Fei Long's calm smexiness sexiness. It's not everyday we get to read about a young, hot and supposedly normal photographer getting himself tangled up with head of a yakuza clan and all the trimmings that come with their oh-so-pushy-and-angsty relationship.
I guess you can already guess that my OTP for Viewfinder is definitely Asami x Takaba although Asami x Feilong and Feilong x Takaba are tempting enough, but not enough to distract me. Their relationship is very unique, in my point of view. So far, there has been no yaoi / shounen-ai cliche which includes a character going through a tsuntsun phase before entering the deredere phase. I don't think Asami would suddenly turn all mushy towards Akihito in the near future either.
Their relationship has been progressing pretty well (or not) until the appearance of Fei Long. The latter pretty much kidnaps Akihito at every chance he gets, and poor Akihito isn't able to do anything against Fei-sama's sexual harrassment and abuse.
As much as I love Fei, I much rather prefer the cliche of 'the prince-charming saving the damsel in distress' (in Asami and Akihito's case, 'the charming yakuza saving a photographer in distress'), which does happen a few times in the manga. Asami could have just let Fei has his ways with Akihito if he doesn't care for the younger man; he could have just let Fei kill Akihito during the first arc of the manga, but he did not. It's just sad that Akihito has not yet realised that he is not just Asami's boytoy as insisted by Fei Long. Would you go all the way to Hong Kong from Japan, with not-quite-healed bullet wounds on multiple parts of your body, just to retrieve a kidnapped person when you have no obligations whatsoever towards that someone if you care not a slightest bit for said person?
I love Fei Long.
I love him very much.
He is just so beautiful, but manly at the same time. Never underestimate a guy with feminine look - this guy is the head of a dangerous organisation in his homeland, Hong Kong. The second volume of Viewfinder centers on Fei Long's past in which we get to know his fucked-up elder brother and the soft-side of Fei Long.
Damn... The guy is even more beautiful with tears streaming down his face or that's just my sadistic side talking. I was somehow relieved that he was never really involved in sexual relationship with Asami. The mild molestation could be put aside. I just cannot see Asami with Fei. For some reason, I have the strange thinking that even if they do get together, they will end up killing each other. Fei is my second dose of healthy angst in Viewfinder. The first source is of course Akihito himself. If you've known me long enough, you'd know that I love characters with insecurities and little self esteem when it comes to love.
And I'm currently listening to Viewfinder Drama CD :) There's a rumour on Yamano-sensei's blog that there will be Viewfinder OVA in the near future after Ikkoku Irokoi Romantan. I desperately hope that it's true :)
I'm impatiently waiting for Naked Truth chapter 9 to be released. August 28 is still a long way to go... And it's a day after Hijrah's birthday too!
