Night Market is something you absolutely don't want to miss when you're in town - if you're not claustrophobic, that is. The limited amount of college breaks I had from the past year steered me away from my weekly visits to the Night Market in my hometown. Well, how would it be possible to go back every week when your house is 415km away from your hostel? I've almost forgotten the homey atmosphere there. Well, you see, it's not just a place to buy cheap, bargain goods. It's also a place to meet your friends, such as your former classmates that you have not seen for years. If you go to the weekly market during school holidays and college breaks, don't ever think of running away from your friends. They'll catch you eventually.
But if you're simply a tourist looking around for a taste of Pasir Mas, Kelantan, be sure to drop by the small town for our lively Night Market. It opens from 3.00pm until 9.30pm every Wednesday. You can't miss it. It's just about 18km away from our capital city, Kota Bharu.
So what can you find here? It depends on where you start your tour.
Let's use the crappy plan I drew above. The Northern part is usually full of women, and young girls. It's where you find a massive selection of clothes vendors. Local silk, satin, Thai Silk, Korean silk, local batek, ready-made kebaya, baju kurung, ready-made modern kebarung, yada yada yada... You name it. They have all kind of materials with all kind of designs and colours, at bargain prices. Yes, you may bargain with the vendors. You can get those quality materials at bargain price, so long as you're careful. Make sure you're familiar with the texture of the materials before letting yourself be blinded by the dirt-cheap prices. They might be scams. Oh, they also have sandals and shoes vendors, but don't bother if you're the designer type. You might lose interest as soon as you see them. You can buy them for leisure and for strolling downtown, yes.
Let's check out the Southern part, then. Well, welcome to the Food Heaven of Pasir Mas Night Market. It's no wonder Malaysia is dubbed a food paradise. Make your way south for all sort of food and drinks. See the picture to the left? This stall is called YFC Stop. They've been doing business here for as long as I can remember. I don't know what Y stands for, but FC definitely stands for 'fried chicken'. They created their very own recipe to rival that of KFC. There are also many food vendors selling similar type of food as you make your way down the road, but you might want to give this stall a try. There's also another good fried chicken stall, handled by an all-guy group in black and white attire. Their recipe is yummy, like they've cracked the Colenel's recipe and added something more for a better taste. What's more is that a piece of chicken costs only RM1.00 to RM1.50!! (USD1.00 = RM3.85, ¥100 = RM3.00). Local food like 'chicken rice', 'kebab', 'satay', 'lemang', etc are available everywhere. I guarantee you'll have a hard time choosing what to buy.
Now, now, you don't want to miss the East part of the Night Market. It's quite similar to the Southern part, but there isn't just food there. They have fruit vendors, music CDs vendors, watches vendors, brooches, pins, sunglasses and other type of accessories.
Watch out for pirate discs. It's your choice, though. One pirated VCD costs around RM6.00. Buy 2 for RM10, and 4 for RM19.00. When these illegal vendors get wind of the police, they'd scram.
There's nothing else left for me to say. Come and see for yourself for a clearer picture XD Visit Malaysia 2007 - we await your arrivals with open arms ^__^. For now, I shall go and attempt to finish my novel, fan fictions and my abandoned collection of poetry and song lyrics.
